This program uses the theme of sustainable development to explore the relationship between people and their natural environment. We explore the complex relationships between Fijian cultural practices, conservation of the natural environment, and eco-tourism. Despite several centuries of outside contact and a unique ethnic mix, traditional Fijian values and customs still flourish.
Our program includes 2 days of introductory lectures with the University of the South Pacific, followed by a 6-day field study which includes several days exploring the pristine coral reefs of the Mamanuca or Yasawa offshore islands and visits to traditional Fijian villages. Some additional pre-departure directed reading and independent study is required.
Since several major airlines offer a free or inexpensive layover in Fiji on the return flight from the South Pacific to the United States, this program is designed as an optional extension for the short programs in Australia and New Zealand (although it is also open to all students).
During your visit to Fiji, you will generally stay in comfortable hostel-style accommodation with the rest of the students in the group. While on the offshore islands, accommodation is typically in small traditional huts called "bures" or on a large boat. You will get the chance to make life-long friends with others in the group, and our accommodation adds to this experience. If you are traveling with someone, you may request to room with that person for the duration of the trip. Accommodation varies, but typically rooms are shared by 2-4 students.
AUIP will provide most meals, and for the remaining meals you have the flexibility to sample local cuisine at one of the many local cafes and restaurants. AUIP also provides all in-country transportation in a comfortable, luxury coach. We travel to the offshore islands in a large, stable catamaran.
